Excavations in Mexico
Our team of experts is currently working on a newly discovered site in Mexico, continuing excavations that uncovered several remains of structures within the ritual settlement between March and June last year, including drainage channels, floors, stone lines and a sacrificial well.
In the northeastern location of the sacrificial complex, the presumed bodies of a child and two adults were discovered next to a series of polished bowls with a circular Teotihuacan-style base.
From its centre of power at Teotihuacán, located about 50 kilometres northeast of present-day Mexico City, the eponymous civilization exerted a tremendous influence over all of Mesoamerica during its heyday in the 6th century, even greater than that of the later Aztec empire.
On the basis of ceramic evidence, our experts have dated the village's origins to the period 450-650, around the same time as the peak of Teotihuacan influence.
The body of a presumed priestess buried as Cihuateteo or Tzitzimime, Nochtli Nenetl, was found in the temple precinct dedicated to Ītzpāpālōtl and is the most valuable contribution to our collection.
It will be displayed during a private auction in Prague.
